I have always been passionate about being an educator since I was young. After raising two independent, outgoing children full of life, I genuinely feel fellow parents must learn how to raise their children by gaining knowledge and support from others. No wonder there is a saying that goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.”
Everyone has a unique journey raising their children. When I first met Dr. Mao 11 years ago, I was in a headspace where I was overwhelmed by my two very different but headstrong children. My children have different personalities and interests, yet they are both very vocal and outgoing about their opinions and beliefs. One had a miserable experience in public high school. The other enjoyed her experience and excelled in the public school system. Raising these different individuals all the while volunteering at various school activities for over 17 years, I got to know many education officials, including school board members, school principals, school district administrators, and special education professionals, whom I admire. Through them, I developed a deeper understanding of my children's learning environment, then became an advocate for the all-around healthy education Dr. Mao recommends.
As a public relations officer in a Chinese school for the past 15 years, I am fortunate to meet our local education officials and countless educators. Their passion and enthusiasm for education moved me, and I decided to do more for our community. I have hosted forums for our school district’s board member elections for 14 years, driven by my desire to make our community aware of what our school boards are doing and what new ideas these school board candidates bring to the table.
Going through the school system is a marathon. Each student is an individual athlete in their respective contests. It doesn’t matter what kind of contest the student is in; all require mental, physical, and psychological exercises. It is a long-term training regimen, and changes won’t happen overnight. It is also not only training for students but parents as well. Parents should walk through the process with their students and provide help and support to their student’s needs. I have met many anxious parents who don’t know which direction to take and how to give help in the right direction. Working along with a solid plan for the student and the parents is crucial for the student’s success.
